are we out of record needles?
If you listened to my show on Monday (or called) thanks for the support, I'll try and keep this spot as long as I possibly can, maybe develop a round of regular listeners. Maybe I'll even blog weekly? If you haven't checked my DJ Profile yet, please be advised I am definitely a DJ that is going to break your heart. If you tune in next week and hear 2 hours of pop music, or m3rck records fare, it is likely still me at the controls. I like too many different and conflicting styles of music to have a niche show, and if you like what I'm playing one week, just take my word for it that you'll love it the next week too. Just listen to all 2 hours before you push your radio into the bathtub. A variety show is almost a niche in itself right? I hope the program director isn't reading this. No matter what happens, I'm sure my 12-3am spot next term is going to sound just as eclectic as this one. Among the things I played this week, I really recommend the Shocking Pinks self-titled album. Kind of surprising that they made it to DFA records since it isn't really dance-y at all. I mean, unless you're trying to dance after a bomb hit of mexican tar. Speaking of which, these guys really take in the druggy indulgence of their forefathers like Brian Jonestown Massacre, Spacemen 3 or the Jesus & Mary Chain to heart. I first noticed this in the new music bin a couple weeks ago, and the cover art was interesting enough to warrant a listen. Hell I gave them a near un-professional number of spins today... There are stand-out gems on the record (i.e. track(s): 2,3,4,8,10,12,17) the rest of it is more of an acquired taste that makes more sense after repeated listens. Along with that I must also recommend the new Forms (www.myspace.com/forms) album which is really kind of phenomenal despite the well-worn sound indie rock fans have more or less grown accustomed used to. I wouldn't mind more bands playing to this aesthetic. I'm putting this one in with my top10 for the year. That, Of Montreal & the new Common album are the only spots that are secure no matter what else comes out between now and the end of the year. Much like the internet, the radio is serious business. Or Sirius business? Even The Angels Of Light are back with a new full length which is really impressive because it works without any big change in their sound. Another great find this week is a band who call themselves Spindrift that incidentally is opening up for The Black Angels next month on November 6th at Johnny Brendas. If you're not in the loop and on the wire about My Bloody Underground yet, you should get crackin', crackity jones. I'll leave you with an image I happily admit stealing from the village voice. Is it still stealing if I link & attribute them? You tell me.
P.S. If you missed them during their last tour, go see British Sea Power at Johnny Brendas on Tuesday October 16th. These boys are coming to our wonderful city all the way from the UK, and hell I have a test the next day but I'm going to be there anyways. I'm going to show up there myself like it is 2003. What is a 2003 party like anyways? Is John Kerry there? Could show up for my test and say "I thought that was 4years from now...?"
